Problem
1.
Computer manufacturers must continually package higher density
disk storage at the same or less cost. Consequently, computer
disks are becoming smaller, with higher density storage.
As
disk manufacturers are required to increase the storage capacity
of computer disks while at the same time decreasing their size,
the quality and shape of the disk surface becomes more important
to the read/write process.
2. The use of
glass as an alternate substrate for disk media is increasing.
Glass disks offer the advantage of superior shock resistance and
lower susceptibility to particle embedment. Roughness control of
the glass surface becomes especially important for low roughness
glass disks.
